We will use a wide variety of natural materials to mix and apply paints and plasters! We will cover techniques that are suitable as finishes for cob or strawbale homes, and are also suitable over conventional drywall, and some conventional exterior surfaces. We will additionally learn about paints and techniques that are related to artistic painting (canvas, paper, wood, etc).
This workshop will be very hands-on. We will cover:
- clay paints and plasters (using found and store-bought clays)
- lime paints and plasters (base coats to refined/polished finishes)
- plaster sculpting and carving
- casein or milk paints
- art paints, such as egg tempera and beer paint!
- coloring with mineral pigments
- photo presentation covering a variety of natural building finishes
Your hard work will be rewarded with three delicious, wholesome meals per day. We source local, organic produce when possible, and emphasize whole, real foods. Mostly our cook will make vegetarian meals, with an occasional meat option. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated!
There is a hot shower available, and compost toilet facilities. Tent sites are available at no extra cost, and there are several earthen, one-room sleeping cottages available for rent ($10/night).
